Description

Fluffy and sweet doughnuts, perfect for a treat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup warm milk
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • Powdered sugar or glaze for coating

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine warm milk, yeast, and a pinch of sugar. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add the remaining sugar, egg, melted butter, and vanilla extract to the yeast mixture. Mix well.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together flour and salt.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until a soft dough forms.
  5. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  6. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
  7. Punch down the dough and turn it out onto a lightly floured surface.
  8. Roll the dough to about 1/2 inch thickness. Cut out doughnut shapes using a doughnut cutter or two different sized round cutters.
  9. Place the doughnuts on a parchment-lined baking sheet, cover, and let rise for another 20-30 minutes.
  10. Heat vegetable oil in a large pot or deep fryer to 350°F (175°C).
  11. Carefully add a few doughnuts at a time to the hot oil. Fry for 1-2 minutes per side, until golden brown.
  12. Remove doughnuts with a slotted spoon and place on a wire rack set over paper towels to drain.
  13. Coat warm doughnuts in powdered sugar or dip in your favorite glaze.

Notes

  • Ensure your milk is warm, not hot, to activate the yeast.
  • Do not overcrowd the pot when frying.
  • Doughnuts are best enjoyed fresh.
